What Is Podcasting?

In short, podcasting is like TiVo for the web. Your content—which could be existing powerpoint presentations, recorded lectures, existing web-based tutorials, etcetera—is packaged into downloadable chunks. Each chunk is typically referred to as an episode. Episodes are released on a semi-regular basis (serialized), and as with episodes on television, combine to form a show.

Here's the cool part: visitors to your website can subscribe to your show, much in the same way a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) allows you to record the latest episode of your favorite television program, whether or not you're available to watch it when it airs. Even better, each episode of your show  can be downloaded onto a portable playback device such as an iPod.

What Can Be Podcast?

If you can put it on the web, it can be podcast. In fact, the underlying technology which makes podcasting possible, RSS (which stands for 'Really Simple Syndication') is still used to provide a subscription-based distribution channel for plain ol' text posts to a web site, most commonly for blog entries. Podcasting and vodcasting simply attach audio and video files, respectively, to this protocol. Here are some examples:
